Caramelized Sugar Hot Chocolate

  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 3 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 4 tbsp sugar
  • 2 oz dark chocolate, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp Foodie Tasting Room vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

The steps to follow |

  1. Caramelize the sugar: In a small saucepan, add the sugar over medium heat. Let it melt without stirring—just gently swirl the pan occasionally until it turns a golden amber color.
  2. Add milk slowly: Once the sugar is caramelized, pour in the milk slowly. The sugar may crystallize at first, but as the milk heats, it will dissolve back in. Stir until combined.
  3. Add cocoa powder and salt: Whisk in the cocoa powder and a pinch of salt until fully dissolved.
  4. Add chocolate: Stir in the chopped chocolate until melted and smooth.
  5. Add vanilla: Remove from heat, stir in the vanilla, and serve.
